Hi all!

A couple of weeks ago I made a post in the LiveSound sub (https://www.reddit.com/r/livesound/comments/pbyst3/xr18_based_mixing_case_questions/) about simplifying/shrinking my live sound setup. I run sound for small local bands and my band. I use a Behringer XR-18 mixer controlled by laptop via Ethernet with an X-Touch for a physical interfaceโ€”everything through a wireless router.

I'm trying to get rid of the two laptop solution for a built-in one. After looking around, I think a pair of Pi 4s could fit my needs for the mixing and recording tasks since the duties are so lightweight. I think it could be fun as shit to put together ... I just need it to be reliable.

I want to put all my mixing/recording needs in one case, including a large fold-down touchscreen monitor. Here is my reasoning, please tell me where I'm jumping the gun:

  • One Pi 4 for mixing duty: run the Behringer X-Air Edit mixing software, which would launch on boot (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pn09rCv1nQs&t=25s), connected via Ethernet.
  • Another Pi 4 connected via USB 3.0 to be used as a recorder running the DAW Reaper (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFfy896hGz0), also to run on boot.
  • Argon ONE V2/M.2 cases with fans for both Pis. Sometimes we're out in the sun with no cover, and I want to prevent any overheating. I'd even add a fan HAT if it helps and I have the space, and am already planning on adding a fan or two in the case for the rest of the components.
  • Undecided: the Pi for recording duty would also have the option to playback break music or backing tracks, since the Pi for mixing is connected via Ethernet (no audio). Would recording 16 channels and outputting two channels of audio via USB be overwhelming if simultaneous? Maybe the recording computer needs to stay a laptop in that case.
  • Also unsure: for the Pi that has the recording/playback duty, would it benefit from a DAC hat?
  • I think I'll just be using an HDMI switch (like this) for the two Pis with one touchscreen monitor.

That's where I'm at with this project: any help would be fantastic! Is this realistic or am I just having fun in my head? Thanks!

I have the same systems (Super NT, Mega SG, and AVS) and a LG CX and use this switch. No problems and cheap. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07RY7Y9PR?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title
