Wish I saw this thread a little earlier. So, I just spent 5 months in mexico. For 3 of those months, I didn't know that this tool, a Water SteriPen existed... I mean maybe I did, but I didn't know if it would be something I should bring. I had a LifeStraw but I actually hated using it. It doesn't flow easily, and yeah, as another user commented, you'd look a bit silly using it. LifeStraw is probably best for when you're camping in the backcountry.... even then, I don't recommend it now that I've tried SteriPen. The advantages of SteriPen are that 1) eco friendly -- no mroe plastic bottles 2) you can use it on any tap water 3) it's reusable and rechargable.
But yes, when you're in Mexico , most likely the hotel or AirBnB will have a garrafon (20 Liters of purified water), and you can refill your bottle with that. I did see a LOT of single use plastic bottles on tours, and when tourists walked around they seem to buy those. I stuck wtih the garrafon, and in a pinch I would use the SteriPen.
I ill also disclose, as a caveat, that the SteriPen kills the bacteria, viruses, and protozoa, but it does not PURIFY the water. Therefore the water may not taste great.
I hope this helps!
