By any chance, are you near a MicroCenter? They have excellent in-store deals for things like this. They even give lil flash drives away as promotions; sometimes BT headphones, and things like that.

And, to address the actual question posed by u/op, you can read (play) a file directly from a USB drive. You'll be able to see it in a file directory just like any other OS, and the native player will play it just fine. I use VLC for a bit more control.
