The best shampoo I found prior to going nopoo was Revita (reviews on Amazon are mixed, but it was the most effective shampoo for me).

My issues were dandruff/itchy scalp, and a bit of thinning hair.

Good luck! Nopoo doesn't seem to work for everyone...I'm just glad it works for me.
