I buy a lot of clothes from Amazon. My rule of thumb is to try to stick with prime stuff or good return policies, and only get things with a lot of reviews (if I don't recognize the brand.)

ETA: I don't just count reviews, I read them scrupulously. That helps, esp if I'm nervous about sizing.
