My base layers are any brand of synthetic "performance" fabric I have handy. I do not wear long sleeve or long underwear because I run hot, but the same principle would hold. I have used expensive shirts like Lululemon and cheap ones from Old Navy and they both work about the same, so save your money unless you are rich.

You can put pads in the clothing washer (front load works better but I have a top loader and put my gloves and elbows in it a few times a year). You can also put bulky stuff like shins and shoulders in the dishwasher. Don't do it when mom or wife is home though.

To avoid funk, drying gear wet from play or wash is important. I have a different brand of this (can't find mine at the moment but got it from Amazon and I am certain it is exactly the same). It is the best $75 I have spent on hockey ever, which easily totals hundreds if not thousands of dollars over the years.

This 100% dries my equipment in about an hour. It is identical to the "Rocket Dryer" but half the cost. It does not take up a lot of space and keeps my gear in neat package until I need it.
