There are a bunch of different kinds of belts, that kind included. There's also like this one which is wider than that but still has a buckle and looks like a belt kind of belt. There are also things more like this that have more going on. I also count anything that you can tie around your waist as a belt, so something like an obi belt like this or this or this. I also have some things that I think were supposed to be scarves, but I use them as belts for lighter materials. The ones I have of those I got at thrift stores, but they look sort of like this.

But yeah the idea is sort of multi-part here. I don't know what your shoulders look like, but mine are about 6 miles wide while my hips are about 3 inches wide. So I need all the help I can get looking like an hourglass instead of a triangle. So, the belt sort of forces more of an hourglass shape by cinching in the waist and creating a distinction between the top and bottom, making that illusion of hourglass I'm going for. It also draws attention down off the shoulders. Finally, it can pull in multiple layers to make it look more like an outfit rather than just some stacked pieces of clothing. I'm not sure how to better describe that, but it looks more "put together" to me at least.

So yeah, any of those sorts of belts can work. Which one you go with just sort of depends on what you're wearing: materials, color, overall bulk, etc. I got a ton of them and just sort of try stuff on until it looks right. lol
