Weird. The only thing I can think of is that maybe your hub isn't fast enough. USB-C hubs aren't always designed to handle Thunderbolt speeds - you should be looking for "Thunderbolt 4" hubs, which are over USB-C. TB3 and other USB-C stuff will work fine over them - it's just that TB4 is the easiest way to ensure that you'll be getting full-speed USB-C goodness, since TB4 certification has some very strict requirements by Intel (i.e. it requires being able to support at least two 4k60 displays).
Example (USB-C TB4 hub with power delivery) - expensive
It is unfortunate but it's still only one cable I have to plugin to either my personal or work laptop as it just hangs off the dock. I would honestly prefer something with TB4 and/or USB ports only. The network, audio, and card readers on these things tend to be junk.

This one has three downstream TB4 ports and four 10GB/s USB-A ports. Unfortunately, it can only power a laptop at 60W which is not enough for most Windows laptops which require 90W+. Hopefully they'll release a new one with more power.
