Across the board wired camera systems will be better. In regards to motion detection, don’t get your hopes up too high, you’re doing the right thing by reading reviews and researching your priorities in a system. So in my experience there’s going to be some trade-off with what we mode and brand you go with.

I’ll focus my feedback around Eufy, reolink, Amcrest:

Eufycam 2 is a name brand wireless system that offers a battery life of 365 days. And based on comments at r/Eufy that’s a fairly accurate number. Eufy is working to implement 2FA security on their cameras so that’s good. Because a lot of people bring up privacy/security, rightfully so. I’ll comment briefly on that later. Eufy isn’t perfect but it offers a nice system and a doorbell. Nice app as well

Reolink, very good cameras - specs, affordable, and plug n play. Plus a very nice app interface. However reolink doesn’t necessary play well with other cameras so once you’re in that eco system you may be locked in. Just a FYI, not necessarily a bad thing.

Amcrest - rebranded Dahuas, that are also very affordable with very good specs. Still pretty much plug n play, but very outdated app user interface. They offer ONVIF which means they do play well with other brands. Also have a good selection of both wired and wireless.

You could also start off very cheap and simple to experiment with Wyze cameras (not a fan) but play around with them for a few months (theyre wireless). Or look into Apple HomeKit cameras if you’re in the apple ecosystem (wireless).

Last thing on security: restricting access to outside your network and changing the cameras usernames and pw’s is the most secure thing you can do. And making sure you’re using the latest firmware. All of these systems are only as secure as they “claim” so we do have to take their weird on “military grade” encryption and all that jazz.
